Mindfulness-based training programs such as mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR; Kabat-Zinn, 1990) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT; Segal, Williams, & Teasdale, 2013) also increase self-compassion (see Chapter 4), but they do so implic- itly, as a welcome byproduct. The most widespread mindfulness-based intervention is mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), an experien- tial learning course that includes eight weekly group sessions, a half-day retreat, and a core curriculum of formal and informal mindfulness medi- tation practices (Kabat-Zinn, 1990).
